Activating Water Kefir Grains

June 10, 2018 /Posted byChaiyo! / 4592 / 0

Water kefir is a wonderful probiotic drink where you can make your own natural HEALTHY soda right at home.

You just received your dehydrated water kefir grains.  It’s easy to activate them and make them a lively living scoby to make unlimited water kefir.

Water Kefir GrainsThis is what your water kefir looks like when they arrive.  Tiny clumps of dry pieces, not much bigger than dirt.

It’s easy to get started.  You just dissolve 60 grams of cane sugar.  Any sugar will do but we like cane sugar the best.  Dissolve this into 700ml of room temperature water.  If you want, you can boil the water to make the sugar dissolve easier but it must be cooled to room temperature before adding the grains.  Once the sugar water is at room temperature, you can then dump the package of grains into the water.

Then leave the water with the grains sit for 3-4 days.  This will activate the grains as it feeds off the sugar in the water.

Water Kefir Grains Day 3

Day 3

Day 1 you will see the grains starting to float and becoming lighter in color.

Day 2 will have plumper grains and more may be floating.

On day 3, the grains are double or triple in size compared to the dehydrated grains.  You might even smell a bit of alcohol coming from the liquid.

Rehydrated Water Kefir GrainsAt day 4, or even day 3 if you have a warm house, you get nice scoop of water kefir grains that you can use. Just strain out the grains in a fine mesh strainer, discard the activation liquid,  and use the grains in your favorite recipe.  You can get full details, information, and recipes from our free Water Kefir eBook.
